Disabled is NOT broken.
Mom went to a disabilities conference today. One attendee matter-of-factly referred to herself and her significant other as broken. What a horrible self-image. Another attendee said that everyone, including herself, was disabled. She was unable to swim, even after taking several classes, so she was disabled because she couldn't swim. What isn't wrong with these attitudes? I know several disabled people. They just happen to have a body or a brain that doesn't work quite right. They don't see themselves as broken, far from it. Different, maybe, if they are old enough mentally to understand those differences. But not broken. And someone isn't disabled simply because they aren't the best at something, or have failed time and time again at something. I don't know how to ride a horse by myself; I've never been trained or tried to do so. I can't fix my car. I'm not disabled because I can't do these things. The person I mentioned above isn't disabled in swimming because she can't swim. The other one isn't broken because she's disabled, or because she isn't. (I forgot to ask Mom if she was disabled.) Hello out there :)
Hello out there :) Yes, I'm still alive. Last year was not very good for me and computers. The graphics part of my old motherboard died in mid December 2009, and I was unable to get a new computer until late March, when Mom & Dad bought me one for my birthday. My monitor died a few months later, after over a decade of service, and I bought this one. During those months, I got away from writing and journaling, and never found my feet in those areas until this month, when I decided they are a do or die thing. The Golden Compass
Finished the Golden Compass this morning, the first book of the trilogy. Just wow... Didn't quite know what to expect after the publicity. 17th Amendment repeal - I don't understand...
Why is there not more said about this? I had no idea there was even a movement for this, much less that it seems to be gaining in popularity, until I read in the paper Saturday. "Moore said he is the only GOP candidate to oppose repealing the 17th Amendment, which calls for U.S. senators to be elected directly by the voters. Theano's Day
I am a day late, oops. Theano's Day is an annual celebration of female philosophers. My favorite female philosophers include Heloïse, the brilliant abbess who died in 1164. She knew several languages, and raised her son in while first a nun, a prioress, and an abbess. She was deserted and eventually spurned by her husband, the latter possibly to save his own skin. Considering the times, she handled her situation very well. Another is Hildegard of Bingen, who was also a Catholic nun. She was musical and superior with writing, letters, speeches, and so forth. She was also scientific and the author of several such texts. A true polymath, as Wikipedia describes her. I also admire Mary Wollstonecraft. She too was involved in dire situations, and was a learned novelist and writer who was not afraid to state her opinions. Rant - Great Lakes student loans
Never do student loans with Great Lakes. They ignore cease and desist letters about phone calls,and continue to bother long after they have SOLD the account. I still occasionally get letters from them as well. They sold my account years ago. If you don't have my loan anymore, than you have no need to stick your nose into my financial business. Criminal Minds to drop/cut back female regulars
http://www.petitiononline.com/cmwomen/petition.htmlThis aggravates me. I don't stop to see Criminal Minds as often as I used to, unfortunately. When I do, it's to see the characters Jennifer, Emily and Penelope. Each of these characters are smart, strong women in "real life" situations -Jennifer is a working mother, Emily is a single mother, and Penelope is more than just a key puncher. I read somewhere lately that producers and so forth listen more to the fans now; I hope that's true. This is one of the most stupid ideas I have heard of in a long time. Unraveling the mess that is my writing, I have a mishmash of notes and stories, finished and unfinished. Added some IM buddies today so I can get into some community chat groups.
